Fordham started his career as a reporter for Sydney’s 2UE radio station, where he earned a Walkley Award for his coverage of the 1997 Thredbo avalanche. Fordham made the transition to television in 1998, joining Sky News Australia as a reporter and presenter.
Fordham joined the Nine Network after less than a year at Sky News, where he worked on tabloid current affairs and news programs like as 60 Minutes, A Current Affair, Nine News, and Today. Fordham stood in for Stuart Bocking on 2UE Nights in the summer of 2008/09, as well as Ray Hadley on 2GB in the summer of 2009. He became a correspondent for Nine News and Today in 2010, and he also covered the 2010 federal election.

Fordham took over as the Today sports host from Cameron Williams in January 2011. In January 2011, he also joined 2GB, replacing Jason Morrison on Sydney Live (since renamed Ben Fordham Live).
