Becnel and Neal scattered Williams’ ashes in Thokoza Park, a black township in Gauteng, South Africa, on June 25, 2006. Becnel and Neal directed and produced the documentary Tribute: Stanley Tookie Williams, 1953-2005, which was published in 2009. Becnel ran for the Democratic Party’s candidacy for Governor of California in 2006, the first black female to do so, announcing her ambition to challenge Schwarzenegger in the forthcoming gubernatorial race. She received 66,544 votes altogether, accounting for 2.7% of all ballots cast, placing her third out of eight Democrats, trailing Phil Angelides and Steve Westly. Her campaign received media attention, and in the final week of the campaign, she raised enough money to launch television and radio advertising.
She has openly chastised Democratic gubernatorial candidates Phil Angelides and Steve Westly for their support for the death sentence. She is equally vocal about other social concerns, including the environment and immigration. Barbara was not invited to a number of crucial Democratic Party events during the general election season due to her vocal criticism of Angelides and Westly. Barbara left the Democratic Party as a result of this, as well as disagreements over issues such as the death penalty. Barbara left the Democratic Party in the early weeks of 2007 to join the Green Party of California, the state affiliate of the Green Party (GPUS). When asked why she joined the Green Party, Becnel said, “The Green Party is always right on the issues—no ifs, ands, or buts.”
