Scarlett worked as a design assistant and patternmaker on a variety of projects while still in school, including opera, dance, film, and Broadway. Scarlett also worked as an assistant costume archivist at The Museum at FIT, where she was responsible for the Haute Couture and textile collections.
Scarlett achieved success on the first season of Bravo’s Project Runway in 2004-2005 but was eliminated in the penultimate challenge. During the run of Project Runway, he became known for his ability to create glamorous fashions while adhering to the show’s strict deadlines and unusual requirements. On the first episode of the show, he created a gown entirely out of cornhusks, a design that Tim Gunn and each of the three judges later cited as the single most iconic design in the series’ history.
Scarlett produced couture collections under his own name after Project Runway for fall 2005 and spring 2006. He joined the New York-based bridal-design house Amsale in January 2006 as Creative Director of its luxury gown collection, Kenneth Pool, where he remained until 2009. Scarlett’s work as a fashion designer and connoisseur for print and the web has landed her in The New York Times, Town and Country, Madame Figaro, Elle, In Style, the New York Daily News, and Women’s Wear Daily.
Scarlett and his designs have appeared on TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress. On Saturday Night Live, he was played by comedian Fred Armisen in a Project Runway parody. Scarlett has created theatrical costumes for Shen Wei Dance Arts, which has been performed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Trace” with the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and “Remember Me,” which has been seen on PBS.
Scarlett joined season two’s Santino Rice on their show On the Road with Austin and Santino in 2010. The Lifetime network aired the series on July 29, 2010, and it followed the couple across the country as they created couture designs using local resources. Scarlett has also donated his design skills to a variety of charitable organizations, including The New York Public Library, New York City Opera, Live Out Loud, Equity Fights AIDS, Women In Need, and others. He returned to the runway in Project Runway: All-Stars in 2012, finishing as runner-up. Austin Scarlett debuted his signature collection of wedding and evening gowns in October 2012.
