Through the early 2000s, Kao was best known for his roles as Archie Johnson in the hit television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Kai Chen, the Blue Ranger, in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. He’s also appeared on Desperate Housewives (as Steve), ER (as Yuri), NBC’s Heroes, Century City, Huff (as Kane), Power Rangers Wild Force (as General Venjix), Once and Again (as Steven), L.A. Firefighters (as Peter), Maybe This Time (as Takeshi), and other shows. In 2013, Kao was cast as a series regular in the NBC TV series Chicago P.D. (a spin-off from Chicago Fire), playing Detective Sheldon.
Kao appeared in Wayne Wang’s Snow Flower and the Secret Fan as Sebastian, and in Quentin Lee’s The People I’ve Slept With as Jefferson, the main romantic lead. In Timothy Tau’s short film bio-pic Keye Luke, which premiered at the 2012 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival and was the Closing Night Film of the inaugural 2013 Seattle Asian American Film Festival, Kao played Edwin Luke, Keye Luke’s brother.[4] Kao recently signed on to star in The Deathday Party, a Chinese thriller starring Anita Yuen and set in the ancient Chinese Alu Caves of Yunan.[5] Kao portrayed Shum in Michael Mann’s 2015 film Blackhat.
Kao also appeared in The Hills Have Eyes 2 (as Han), Nomad: The Warrior (as Shangrek), When In Rome (as Nobu), and Jet Li’s The One (as Woo). In the video game Need for Speed: Carbon, Kao provided the voice of Kenji. Initiation (2011), a short film written, directed, and produced by Kao, starred Ashley Bell and Kao’s CSI co-star Marc Vann. The plot revolves around an assassin trainee (Bell) who experiences jitters on initiation day while working with her mentor (Vann). Fast Money (2006), a short film directed by Jerry Chan that Kao produced and starred in as Jin.
