Leeds’ first professional acting gig was as an understudy in the Broadway musical Teddy & Alice when he was eight years old. Leeds eventually took on the role of Quentin Roosevelt. Leeds then played Gavroche in the national tour of Les Miserables. After leaving Les Miserables, Leeds appeared as Jason in the Broadway production of Falsettos on Wednesday and Saturday matinées. For a year, he starred in the musical alongside Broadway legends such as Michael Rupert, Chip Zien, and Mandy Patinkin. Leeds left the production after briefly taking over the evening performances to play the title role in Carly Simon’s opera Romulus Hunt.
Leeds starred in the Polygram Filmed Entertainment film A Pig’s Tale and as Cadet Dotson in the Damon Wayans film Major Payne. Leeds and his then-writing partner, David Lampson, were cast in the Bravo reality show Situation: Comedy. The show, produced by Sean Hayes, documented the process of creating two competing pilots. Stephen’s Life, a pilot created by Leeds and Lampson, was chosen from among 10,000 submissions. The pilot was shot for NBC and won the competition, starting Leeds’ writing career. Leeds subsequently went back to acting, appearing on Veep and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
In 2011, NBC produced his drama pilot Rex is Not Your Lawyer. Leeds and Lampson later developed another television pilot, Brenda Forever, for NBC, but it was not picked up for a full series. Leeds went on to play Josh in the ABC comedy Cristela on a regular basis. Leeds went on to write a comedy pilot called Those People for Kelly Ripa’s firm and ABC, as well as act on Comedy Central’s Workaholics. Leeds joined the Main Company of the sketch comedy/improv ensemble The Groundlings in November 2015.
