She presently works as The New Yorker’s contract writer. Additionally, she has appeared in the Oxford American, Gourmet, Allure, W, and House & Garden. The New York Times Book Review, Vogue, Time, The Oxford American, The New York Times Magazine, and the Elements of Literature textbook. Several of her short tales have appeared in anthologies, such as “Anthropology” in The New Granta Book of the American Short Story (2007, edited by Richard Ford), “Brothers and Sisters Around the World” in The Best American Short tales 2001, and “Winter Barley” in The Best American Short Stories 1993.
Interesting Women: Stories, her collection of short stories published in 2001, highlighted African-American women living overseas, particularly in Italy. She has investigated the perspectives of well-educated, affluent young women navigating European societies and racial and class issues. Americans living in Europe were also a theme in her 2006 book Lost Hearts in Italy: A Novel. Lee was interviewed and stated that, “What I like to investigate when I write is what people dream about What fascinates me is fantasy, the dream of being away, the state of being foreign, of being apart.”Through her work, Andrea Lee attempts to address difficult issues of race, gender, class, and identity in the contemporary world by fusing fantasy and adventure.
