Previously, she worked as a reporter and co-anchor of the evening newscast for WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. Canning worked for WPTV-TV in West Palm Beach, Florida, from 1999 to 2001, and for CKVR-TV in Barrie, Ontario, from 1997 to 1999. She was also the morning anchor for Greenville, Mississippi’s WXVT-CBS. Canning worked as an assignment editor for the tabloid TV show Extra from 1996 to 1997 before joining CKVR. She also interned for Baywatch and lived in the same house as a future media celebrity and host Ryan Seacrest.[Canning worked as an ABC News journalist from 2004 to April 2012, covering the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Iraq War for ABC’s affiliate NewsOne.

She covered a wide range of issues at ABC News, from crime stories and landmark trials to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and the Casey Anthony case. Her public prominence skyrocketed after she appeared on 20/20 with Charlie Sheen on February 28, 2011.
