On June 2, 2004, Earhart took her first flying lesson and earned her private pilot certificate in a Cessna 172. As part of her instrument training, she flew a Cirrus SR22 from Oakland, California to Miami, Florida in December 2011. In July 2013, she received the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award from the Atchison, Kansas Chamber of Commerce. The prize is granted to a lady who embodies Amelia Earhart’s spirit. In collaboration with Denver’s Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, Earhart and her copilot, Shane Jordan, flew around the world in a single-engine airplane. Her path was to fly across the United States, then south into the Caribbean, northeast Brazil, and the South Atlantic Ocean.
Earhart and Jordan began their world circumnavigation trip on June 26, 2014, departing Oakland, California at 8:19 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on a single-engine Pilatus PC-12 NG. They made 17 stops over the 24,300 nautical mile journey, which took 108 flying hours. On July 9, as she and Jordan flew above Howland Island (the island Amelia Mary Earhart was looking for during her 1937 disappearance), she tweeted the names of the first beneficiaries of the Fly With Amelia Foundation flight training scholarships. She is the second-youngest woman to fly around the world, behind Richarda Morrow-Tait, the first. In 2023, she co-wrote and self-published her debut book, Learn to Love the Turbulence.
