In 1983, on her second night in Nashville, Steve Earle spotted Alice Randall at the Bluebird Cafe. Earle began teaching Randall how to write country songs that evening. Randall created her own music production firm, Midsummer Music, in Nashville after beginning her career in country music with Steve Earle as a mentor. Randall is the first African-American woman to write a number-one country song. In 1994, country artist Trisha Yearwood released the track “XXX’s and OOO’s (An American Girl)”. Over 20 of her songs have been recorded, including multiple top 10 and top 40 hits, and many of them have been performed by Trisha Yearwood and Mark O’Connor. She also contributed to Johnny Cash’s song “The Chicken in Black,” which spent twelve weeks on Billboard’s US Hot Country Songs chart.Randall wrote the video of the year, “Is There Life Out There” by Reba McEntire, which won the 1992 Academy of Country Music Awards.

Randall and Caroline Randall Williams created the cookbook to promote healthy living in their own life and across the African American community by eliminating fats and sugars while paying tribute to traditional soul food. In February 2016, the book won the 2016 NAACP Image Award for Literature (Instructional). Alice Randall, Carter, and Courtney Little co-wrote My Country Roots in 2006. She published this nonfiction piece in Nashville through Naked Ink. In 1994, Randall developed and produced the pilot for CBS’s television movie XXX’s and OOO’s, which was about four ex-wives of country music singers. Allan Arkush directed the one-hour and fifty-minute film, which John Wilder co-wrote.
