Alan Carr is an English comedian, writer, and broadcaster. In 2001, he made his debut, winning the City Life Best Newcomer of the Year and the BBC New Comedy Awards. Alan Graham Carr was born in Northampton as the oldest son of Christine and Graham Carr, and spent the majority of his youth there. His father is a former Northampton Town manager and Newcastle United head scout from the North East of England. Gary is Carr’s younger brother. He attended Northampton’s Weston Favell Upper School before graduating from Middlesex University with a 2:1 BA (Hons) degree in Drama and Theatre Studies. Look Who It Is!, his autobiography, was published. Look Who It Is! is the autobiography of Alan Carr, a British comedian and television personality. It chronicles his life from his childhood in Weymouth to his current role as host of The Friday Night Project. Carr describes growing up in the shadow of his father, Graham Carr, and being expected to grow up to be a great football player despite his early “puppy fat” in the book.
The author laments his schooldays, when he was chosen last for the football squad after the other students discovered his lack of talent, and when his father forced him to decline to connect with a classmate because he was supposedly “gaying him up.” Carr also discusses how puberty left him with “big teeth” and a campy voice.

Carr does stand-up comedy on a regular basis, both on tour and on television. In his twenties, he established himself as a regular performer on the Manchester comedy circuit, where he met fellow comedians Jason Manford, Justin Moorhouse, and John Bishop, and hosted his own monthly comic and cabaret show Alan Carr’s Ice Cream Sunday at the Manchester Comedy Store. Carr received the City Life Best Newcomer of the Year and the BBC New Comedy Awards in 2001.
Carr has appeared in three Edinburgh shows and toured the UK in 2007, which was followed by a DVD titled Tooth Fairy Live. He has appeared in the Royal Variety Performance and performed at the Apollo Theatre in London, which was filmed for the BBC One series Live at the Apollo.
He has toured and performed at numerous festivals, including the Reading and Leeds Festivals, as well as the Latitude Festival and the Kilkenny Comedy Festival. He has performed stand-up comedy all around the world, notably at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. Carr appeared in Channel 4’s Comedy Gala, a benefit concert staged at the 02 Arena in March 2010 to help Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.
