Driver is the son of paralegal Nancy Wright (née Needham) and Joe Douglas Driver. He is descended from Dutch, English, German, Irish, and Scottish ancestors. His father’s family originated in Arkansas, and his mother’s family originated in Indiana. Rodney G. Wright, his stepfather, is a Baptist minister. Driver moved to Mishawaka, Indiana, with his older sister and mother when he was seven years old, and graduated from Mishawaka High School in 2001. Driver was raised as a Baptist and sang in the church choir.

Driver spent a year at the University of Indianapolis before auditioning for Juilliard. While working at the Target Distribution Center, he learned that he had been accepted.
