Alfonzo Peter Bailey was born on February 24, 1938, in Columbus, Georgia, and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama. From 1956 to 1959, he served in the United States Army and attended Howard University until 1961.

Bailey relocated to Harlem in 1962. In June of that year, he heard Malcolm X speak near Mosque No. 7. After Malcolm X left the Nation of Islam in 1964, Bailey joined his Organization of Afro-American Unity. Bailey was the editor of the group’s newsletter, Blacklash. In 1965, he served as a pallbearer at Malcolm X’s funeral. From 1968 to 1975, Bailey worked as an associate editor at Ebony. From 1975 until 1981, he was associate director of the Black Theatre Alliance (BTA), and he wrote the BTA Newsletter. In 1998, he collaborated with Malcolm X’s nephew, Rodnell Collins, on the book Seventh Child: A Family Memoir of Malcolm X. Based on interviews with the choreographer, he wrote Revelations: The Autobiography of Alvin Ailey in 1995.
In 2013, he published Witnessing Brother Malcolm X: The Master Teacher, a memoir. Bailey has written for The Black Collegian, Black Enterprise, Black World, Essence, Jet, The Negro Digest, the New York Daily News, and The New York Times, among other publications. He contributes to the Trice-Edney Wire Service with a bimonthly column. Bailey has lectured about Malcolm X at more than a dozen schools and universities, as well as served as an adjunct professor at Hunter College, the University of the District of Columbia, and Virginia Commonwealth University.
