He was previously the controller and deputy head of the BBC Newsroom and the British digital television news channel BBC News. He previously worked for the Irish national broadcaster RTÉ as the managing director of news and current affairs and deputy director-general.

Kevin was previously the Editor of the BBC Ten O’Clock News, which he joined in March 2004 after serving as Acting Editor since September 2003. Kevin went to Elstree’s Haberdasher’s Aske’s School and then Cambridge’s St John’s College, where he studied French and German. After a brief stint with PriceWaterhouse, he joined the BBC Business and Economics Unit in 1989 as a researcher, then assistant producer.
Kevin joined the BBC Nine O’Clock News as a producer in 1990. In 1994/5, he worked as a producer for BBC News in Brussels. He worked as an assistant editor for the Nine O’Clock and Ten O’Clock News from 1996 to 2001. He worked as an editor at BBC News 24 from 2001 to 2003, and then as acting editor of the BBC Ten O’Clock News from 2003 to 2004, before being confirmed in the position in March 2004. The coverage of the Madrid bombing earned the Ten O’Clock News a BAFTA and a Royal Television Society Award for News Programme of the Year in 2004. The Ten also won an RTS News Event award in 2004 for its coverage of the Darfur crisis, and a second BAFTA in 2005 for its coverage of the London bombings on July 7.
Bakhurst was in Washington to cover the presidential campaigns of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, as well as the political fallout from 9/11. He also covered the handover of Hong Kong in 1997. In January 2009, he produced coverage of President Barack Obama’s Inauguration. In 2005 and 2008, the BBC News channel was named RTS News Channel of the Year.
