Cheryl Dunye The Watermelon Woman
Dunye made her feature film debut in 1996 with The Watermelon Woman, a film about the history of black women and lesbians in cinema. Dunye made up a fictional character named Fae Richards and created an archive for her. She then used the creative archival material to curate fundraising events and show donors progress. Cheryl, played by Dunye, is an aspiring black lesbian filmmaker who is trying to make history while also trying to produce her own work in the film.
