Garland Robinette Career
Robinette worked as a news anchor and investigative reporter for WWL-TV Channel 4 in New Orleans for two decades (August 1970–August 8, 1990). After leaving the television station, Robinette worked as the head of public relations for Freeport-McMoRan in New Orleans before establishing his own agency. He returned to the media in 2005, filling in for David Tyree, a popular anchor who had been diagnosed with cancer. Tyree died several weeks after Hurricane Katrina, therefore his post became permanent. Robinette rose to national prominence following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. As the storm made landfall, WWL was the only broadcast media outlet in New Orleans that could continue to operate.
Robinette was transmitting from a hurriedly assembled set-up in a closet of the WWL studios after the high-rise building’s windows blew out. Robinette’s broadcasts were a vital source of information for residents in the Greater New Orleans area who could hear radio broadcasts in the days between when the hurricane hit and when outside relief arrived. On September 2, 2005, Robinette conducted the famous interview with Mayor Ray Nagin, where the mayor ordered officials in the Federal Government who had been promising but not providing relief to “get off your asses” He also featured in Hexing A Hurricane, a documentary chronicling the first six months in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, with Angela Hill, his former coanchor and ex-wife.
