Kalb worked as an award-winning reporter for CBS News and NBC News for 30 years. Kalb was the final newsman recruited by Edward R. Murrow to join CBS News, becoming a member of the later generation of the “Murrow Boys.” Because of his work at CBS, he was placed on Richard Nixon’s “enemies list.” He was NBC’s chief diplomatic correspondent and Meet the Press host. Bernard Kalb worked alongside him for many years during Kalb’s tenures at CBS and NBC. Many nonfiction books (Eastern Exposure, Dragon in the Kremlin, The Volga, Roots of Involvement, Kissinger, Campaign ’88, The Nixon Memo, and One Scandalous Story) and two best-selling novels (In the National Interest and The Last Ambassador) have been written or cowritten by Kalb.
On October 10, 2017, his book, The Year I Was Peter the Great, was released. Enemy of the People: Trump’s War on the Press, the New McCarthyism, and the Threat to American Democracy, his most recent book, was published in 2018 by the Brookings Institution Press.’Assignment Russia’ (2021), his most recent book, is also published by Brookings. The Kalb Report, a monthly discussion of media ethics and responsibility sponsored by George Washington University, is hosted by Kalb at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. He was a Fox News news analyst and a contributor to National Public Radio and America Abroad. He currently serves as a senior adviser at the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.
