He began as a city hall reporter for the publication, working his way up through the ranks. He later worked as the paper’s assistant city editor, a South America correspondent located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the London bureau head, the international editor, and, most recently, the assistant managing editor of the Style section. He began writing columns for the paper’s opinion page in 2005, and he also writes a twice-week column on politics and culture, as well as a weekly online conversation with readers. Robinson frequently appears as a liberal political analyst[8] on MSNBC cable-TV network shows such as Morning Joe, PoliticsNation with Al Sharpton, The Rachel Maddow Show, The 11th Hour with Brian Williams, and Andrea Mitchell Reports. In addition, he is often a panelist on NBC’s public affairs program Meet the Press.

Robinson received the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 2009 for his essays about then-Senator Barack Obama during his first presidential campaign. Robinson has been named a 2021 honoree of The Arthur W. Page Centre for Integrity in Public Communication’s Larry Foster Award for Integrity in Public Communication. He is one of the Larry Foster Award winners of the fifth class, which recognizes professionals who “exemplify the importance of truthful communication with the public.”Robinson was interviewed for the Frontline documentary Putin’s Road to War in March 2022, where he discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
