Prentice Penny is a producer, writer, and director from the United States. He is best known for creating the HBO comedy Insecure. He wrote and directed the Netflix film Uncorked. Prentice began his professional career as a writer’s trainee on the television sitcom Girlfriends, where he later became a staff writer.

Prentice began his professional career as a writer’s trainee on the television sitcom Girlfriends, where he later became a staff writer. He went on to serve as a writer and co-producer on the show Do Not Disturb, where he was the only Black writer. He subsequently went on to co-produce Scrubs before landing his first producer credit on the show Breaking In. He joined The Hustle as executive producer in 2013. He later became a co-executive producer and writer for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In 2017, he created, produced, and acted in the lifestyle series Upscale with Prentice Penny, which focuses on mindful consumption.
Uncorked, a father/son narrative about an African-American man attempting to become a sommelier, was released on Netflix in March 2020. Penny had numerous new projects in the works as of July 2020. He will collaborate with Chernin Entertainment and Netflix to direct a holiday film inspired by Penny and his wife. “When my wife Tasha and I came up with the idea, we felt that African-American Christmas movies never got to play in the same magical sandbox that traditionally white movies do,” he explained. We wanted to see images of ourselves reproduced in this genre, and we wanted to make a film that black families would enjoy seeing themselves represented in for generations.” Penny collaborated with comedian Sam Jay to launch PAUSE with Sam Jay for HBO in 2021, and she serves as Executive Producer. The show got renewed for a second season in 2021. Onyx Collective has stated that he will have an overall deal with them.
