Johnson began his on-air career in 2005 as a reporter and nightly weekend anchor for NBC affiliate KNDO/KNDU-TV in Yakima/Tri-Cities, Washington. He then served as a reporter and nightly anchor for NBC affiliate KSL-TV in Salt Lake City, Utah. Johnson joined CBS News in 2009 as a network journalist and fill-in anchor in Washington, D.C. While there, he concentrated on the White House, Capitol Hill, and international policy matters. He covered the demise of Osama bin Laden and interviewed then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her 2011 Middle East tour. Johnson began working as an anchor and general-assignment reporter for KNBC in Los Angeles in 2012.

He covered Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign from Boston, the Asiana Flight 214 crash landing at San Francisco International Airport, and the mass murders at the Washington Navy Yard. He joined Today in Los Angeles as a co-anchor alongside Daniella Guzman in June 2014. He covered the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He co-hosted a special report on the Opening Ceremony in Rio, which received a Los Angeles Emmy. Johnson joined ABC News as a journalist in March 2018. Johnson took over as co-anchor of Good Morning America’s weekend broadcasts in September of that year.

Throughout the COVID-19 outbreak, Johnson served as ABC News’ chief correspondent. He covered election week from Arizona as well as the Democratic primaries for the 2020 election cycle. On February 1, 2021, ABC announced that Johnson will replace outgoing Tom Llamas as Saturday anchor of ABC World News Tonight, while he would also continue to co-host Good Morning America on weekends.
