Stein and his friend Johnny turned a mobile disco in Padstow that he had run as a student into a quayside nightclub. It gained popularity thanks to its freeze-dried curries. Nonetheless, the club lost its permit and was shut somewhere near the police, chiefly because of regular fights with neighborhood anglers. The pair actually had a permit for an eatery in one more piece of the structure, so they went on with that to deflect liquidation.
Stein used his experience as a commis chef to run the kitchen. In the long run he changed over it into a little harbor-side bistro, The Fish Eatery, with his most memorable spouse Jill in 1975. His company currently operates four restaurants, including a bistro, café, seafood delicatessen, pâtisserie shop, gift shop, and cooking school as of 2015. Although the BBC has yet to release some of Stein’s early pioneering series, the majority of his work for television has been made available on VHS tape or DVD. However, much of it has been licensed to the Good Food cable TV channel since the end of 2018, where it has been broadcast with extensive editing, omitting up to 20% of the original broadcast footage, in order to include commercials.
Each series has been accompanied by a book, and in 1989, Stein’s E-=nglish Seafood Cookery won the Glenfiddich Award for Best Food Book. Stein was granted the OBE in the 2003 New Year Praises for administrations to the travel industry in Cornwall and the CBE in the 2018 New Year Respects for administrations to the economy.
The permanent closure of Stein’s restaurant in Porthleven, Cornwall, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic was announced on June 22, 2020. Since March 2020, the restaurant had been closed. In July, it was reported that cook Michael Caines would assume control over the eatery.
