Seda made his film debut in the boxing film Gladiator (1992), playing Romano, a Cuban boxer. He has since appeared in a number of films and television shows. Seda was nominated for Best Male Lead at the Spirit Awards in 1995 for his role in the 1994 film I Like It Like That, alongside Rita Moreno and Lauren Vélez. He was nominated for the Palme d’Or (Best Actor Award) at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996 for his role as Blue in the film The Sunchaser, in which he co-starred with actor Woody Harrelson. Seda rose to prominence among Hispanic filmgoers when he co-starred with Jennifer Lopez in Selena (1997), a film based on the true story of Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla.

His first major film role was as the protagonist in King Rikki, a reimagining of Shakespeare’s Richard III set in East Los Angeles. Seda has appeared in over two dozen films, including Bad Boys II (2003) as Roberto, and on numerous television shows. Aside from Homicide, he has played Dino Ortolani in Oz, Matty Caffey in Third Watch, Paul Falsone (in a Homicide/Law & Order crossover), House, and CSI: Miami. He plays Marine John Basilone in the HBO World War II mini-series The Pacific, which premiered on March 14, 2010. Seda appeared as a guest star in an episode of Burn Notice and made a cameo appearance in 2007.

Seda first appeared as Detective Antonio Dawson in Dick Wolf’s Chicago franchise in 2012, first as a recurring character in Chicago Fire and then as a main cast member in the spin-off Chicago P.D. in 2014. Seda reprised his role in another spin-off, Chicago Justice, which was canceled after one season. His daughter Haley appeared as a key witness in a bombing on Chicago P.D. Following the cancellation of Chicago Justice, it was announced in July 2017 that Seda would return to Chicago P.D. On April 19, 2019, it was reported that NBC/Wolf Entertainment officials informed Seda that his contract would not be renewed, resulting in his departure from the series after six seasons.

In 2020, Seda was cast in the lead role of Dr. Benjamine Glass in the pilot episode of David Appelbaum’s NBC apocalyptic drama series La Brea. With the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting production of the pilot, NBC let Seda’s contract, as well as the contracts of the majority of the other pilot cast members, expire. Seda returned to the show after the pilot was picked up straight to series in January 2021, with his character rewritten as Dr. Sam Velez.
