Cornel West Barack Obama

West has also spoken about the lack of sufficient black leadership and how it causes black communities to question their political ability to ensure change. Cornel West openly endorsed Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, in 2008. In an April 2011 interview, West further reversed his support for Obama, saying that Obama is a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black muppet of corporate plutocrats. And now he has become and is proud of the American killing machine. In an interview in November 2012, West stated that he considered Obama a Rockefeller Republican in blackface.

In 2011, with Tavis Smiley, his co-host on the Public Radio International program Smiley & West, West participated in a ‘Poverty Tour’. The stated goal of the tour was to highlight the plight before the 2012 presidential election of the deprived population of the United States, whose candidates West and Smiley said had neglected the plight of the poor. In 2013, at the 50th anniversary celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s I Have a Dream address, West referred to Obama’s speech as contradictory and as pretty words that conceal ugly deeds.
