Sambolin was the CNN host of Early Start. Sambolin is a Chicago native who spent nine years anchoring newscasts for local affiliates WMAQ-TV (NBC) and WSNS-TV. Sambolin announced her engagement to baseball executive Kenny Williams in January 2013. Sambolin announced in May 2013 that she had breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy on May 28, 2013. She stated that she “struggled for weeks” to find the best way to make this information public, and that she finally did so while discussing Angelina Jolie’s New York Times OpEd piece describing her own double mastectomy.
From 1999 to 2002, Sambolin created and hosted Small Talk for Parents on PBS station WYCC-TV and Nuestros Nios on Telemundo affiliate WSNS-TV. In 2002, she began working as a freelance weekend news anchor for NBC affiliate WMAQ-TV in Chicago. The following year, she joined WSNS-TV as a reporter and anchor, making her the first Chicago on-air broadcaster to work at both English and Spanish-language stations at the same time. She launched the weekly health and family series Nuestra Familia on WSNS. She was promoted to weekday anchor of NBC 5 News Today at 4:30 a.m., which she co-hosted with Rob Elgas in 2007. The program was a pioneer in early morning newscasts, which later became popular in Chicago and other major cities across the country.
Sambolin hosted Un Buen Doctor, a weekly medical series focusing on Latino health issues that aired on cable stations around the world. Sambolin left WMAQ in November 2011 to co-anchor CNN’s Early Start with Ashleigh Banfield. Sambolin left Early Start on December 13, 2013, citing the primary reason as being for her children and to be closer to family in the Chicago area. On April 23, 2014, it was announced that Sambolin would return to WMAQ as co-anchor of NBC 5 News Today with Stefan Holt. She started on May 22 and will leave in October 2021.
