He was born in New York City in a Jewish family, in the SoHo neighborhood of lower Manhattan. He is the son of corporate lawyer Susan (née Orzack) and artist Stephen Arnold Posen. He has ancestors from Shklow, Belarus, and ychlin, Poland. His interest in fashion design began as a child, when he stole yarmulkes from his grandparents’ synagogue to make ball gowns for dolls.

He went to Saint Ann’s School, a private school in Brooklyn, and interned with fashion designer Nicole Miller during his sophomore year. He also received a Scholastic Art and Writing Award as a teen. He enrolled in the pre-college program at Parsons The New School for Design when he was 16 years old. In 1999, he graduated from Saint Ann’s. Posen received a prominent career opportunity in 2000 after a dress he designed for Naomi Campbell was passed around among several fashion insiders, including actress Paz de la Huerta. He is well-connected and has referred to Stella Schnabel as his muse. Posen met his future publicist and event producer Ed Filipowski of KCD through Interview magazine Editor-in-Chief Ingrid Sischy, who offered to represent him for free.

Posen returned to New York in 2001 and set up an atelier in his parents’ living room, with a USD$15 allowance. He was chosen to present a capsule collection as part of GenArt’s Fresh Faces in Fashion New York 2001 in October of the same year. He received a $20,000 grant. Following the success of his first runway show in 2001, Posen was courted by fashion titans Yves Carcelle, president of LVMH Fashion Group; Sidney Toledano, CEO and director of Christian Dior S.A.; and Domenico De Sole, president and CEO of Gucci Group NV. He debuted a more casual Pre-Fall 2015 Trunk Show collection in 2014.

Rodale Books released Posen’s 288-page cookbook in October 2017.
