Yul Kwon Survivor

Kwon was recruited to take part in the thirteenth season of Survivor in 2006, which was notable for the decision of the producers to divide the contestants into tribes according to their ethnicity. He began his life as a member of the Asian American Puka Puka tribe, where he met fellow Korean-American attorney Rebekah “Becky” Lee and formed a lasting friendship. He was taken to Exile Island by the Hispanic Aitutaki tribe in Episode 2, but he was able to decipher the clues and locate the immunity idol that had been hidden there. In Episode 3, the four ethnically distinct tribes merged into two, and Kwon and Lee joined the new tribe. Regardless of the results of the challenge, both tribes were informed in Episode 6 that they would have to remove someone from their tribe by vote.

Cao Boi was seen as a loose cannon who could not be trusted, so Kwon and his alliance decided to vote him out. Sundra was recruited by Kwon, Lee, Penner, and Woodcock around this time. All remaining survivors were given the opportunity to “mutiny” and defect to the opposing tribe in Episode 8. Kwon, Lee, Oakley, and Lusth were reduced to four members in opposition to an eight-member tribe when Woodcock and Penner joined the Rarotonga tribe. The new Aitu 4 were able to win four challenges in a row despite the odds.

This sent them to tribal council, where they voted out Brad Virata, Rebecca Borman, and Jenny Guzon-Bae (in a twist where they had to vote out two members of the same tribal council). When the two tribes merged into Aitutonga at the Final Nine, Kwon planned to use the Hidden Immunity Idol to sabotage Penner, a former ally and mutineer. Gentry agreed with Kwon that Gentry would vote against Kwon on the jury if Kwon refused to vote out Penner before them if Penner was voted out first. Penner and the Aitu 4 continued to dominate the match and voted out Woodcock in the Final Seven; however, Kwon was constantly pressured to vote out Penner, a traitor.

Lee, Lusth, Oakley, and Kwon were shocked to learn that the final tribal council would have three members during the Final Four. Lusth and Kwon agreed that a tie-breaker challenge between Lee and Oakley would be the fairest decision at the immunity challenge. Lee declined Kwon’s offer to offer his idol to her. In the tie-breaker, neither Lee nor Oakley could use flint to start a fire in the allotted time. Lee won the challenge and advanced to the Final Three.

Kwon received praise at the Final Tribal Council for his skill in the social aspect of the game as well as his strategic prowess. Brad Virata, Candice Woodcock, Jonathan Penner, Adam Gentry, and Sundra Oakley all cast their votes for Kwon, who prevailed over Becky Lee and Ozzy Lusth to win the title of Sole Survivor.

Kwon joined Facebook’s Privacy product team in February 2013, and in 2015, he was promoted to Product Management Director. He left Facebook in June 2018 and is now a Vice President of Product Management at Google.

Yul Kwon Winners at War

Kwon returned to Survivor: Winners at War after a 14-year and 27-season absence. He was a Dakal tribe member who allied himself with Sophie Clarke, Nick Wilson, and Wendell Holland. They started looking for old-school players. Following a tribal swap, Kwon became a member of the Sele tribe. During the first three tribal councils he attended, he helped vote off Amber Mariano, Tyson Apostol, and Parvati Shallow, but he later became the ninth person voted off and finished 14th on day 35 after failing to earn the right to return to the game from the Edge of Extinction. Kwon voted for eventual winner Tony Vlachos as a juror.
