Appelbaum taught at Harvard University before joining The Atlantic. Appelbaum’s academic work focused on the late-nineteenth-century associative republicanism known as the “guilded age,” when mass-membership organizations such as the Knights of Pythias, Chicago Lumber Exchange, and the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union were central to national politics. Appelbaum wrote a long-form piece in the March 2019 issue of The Atlantic arguing for President Donald Trump’s impeachment. According to The Washington Post’s Margaret Sullivan, Appelbaum’s column “moved… impeachment, all-but-taboo in Big Media’s coverage of Trump,…., from the margins into the mainstream — across the journalism spectrum.” How America Ends, 2019 is his book. He was raised in Newton, Massachusetts and is a graduate of the Maimonides School in Brookline, Massachusetts.
