In Houston, she began her career as a schoolteacher and part-time model. She quit teaching to pursue a career as a lead singer full-time. Adams first caught Thomas Whitfield’s and Sound of Gospel Records’ attention as a lead singer with Houston’s Southeast Inspirational Choir, which was affiliated with the Church of God in Christ and directed by Carl Preacher, Brenda Waters, and Shirley Joiner. She was the featured vocalist on the choir’s single “For My Liberty.” With a performance titled “My Trust Lies in You,” Adams was featured on the Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar Choir’s Give Us Peace album. She later signed a recording contract with Sound of Gospel, which resulted in her first album, Just As I Am, being released in 1987.
Adams received significant attention outside of the urban contemporary gospel arena with the release of Mountain High… Valley Low on Elektra Records in 1999. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (Janet Jackson, Boyz II Men), James “Big Jim” Wright (Mariah Carey, Nicole C. Mullen), Warryn Campbell (Mary Mary, Brandy), and Keith Thomas (Mary Mary, Brandy) all contributed to the album’s production (BeBe & CeCe Winans). In 2000, the album went double platinum and earned Adams a Grammy Award. The album’s notable singles include “Yeah,” “Fragile Heart,” and “Open My Heart.” “Fragile Heart” was dedicated to Adams’ long-time road manager, who passed away in 1998.
Following the release of What a Wonderful Time, Adams launched her radio career with The Adams Morning Show, which was broadcast in over 26 radio markets in less than two years. Marcus D. Wiley played Bishop Secular on her radio show. Adams sang “Already Alright” on BET’s The Mo’Nique Show. Her eleventh studio album, Becoming, was released on May 3, 2011, and was produced by Steve Bracey. Drathoven’s new single “Be Still” premiered on The Adams Morning Show on Tuesday, April 19.
