Wendell Pierce is a businessman and actor from the United States. Pierce rose to prominence as a character actor on both the stage and the big screen. From 2002 to 2008, he rose to prominence as Detective Bunk Moreland in the acclaimed HBO drama series The Wire. Pierce was born in New Orleans, the third of three children to a teacher and a decorated World War II veteran who worked as a maintenance engineer. In 1944, his father’s segregated Army unit assisted the Marines in winning the Battle of Saipan. Pierce grew up in Pontchartrain Park, Louisiana’s first African-American postwar suburb, in a black middle-class neighborhood. After returning home from the war, his father, like many other black veterans, settled in the neighborhood. During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the neighborhood was destroyed, including Pierce’s family home, which was flooded by 14 feet (4.3 m) of water.

Pierce and his co-stars were skeptical of The Wire’s success when they were first cast: “I remember the first time we all sat around and watched the pilot. ‘Man, I don’t think this shit is going anywhere,’ we all said to each other. He portrayed J. Jenks in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 in 2012. Pierce learned to play the trombone for his role in Treme, though he relied on “sound double” Stafford Agee of the Rebirth Brass Band.
Pierce played Teddy in a CBS revival of the sitcom The Odd Couple, alongside Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon, from 2015 to 2017. Pierce launched a campaign to replace Mike Henry as the voice of Cleveland Brown on Family Guy when he stepped down in June 2020 due to the George Floyd protests. Arif Zahir, a YouTube personality, beat him to the role. Pierce has appeared in a number of stage productions. At the John F. Kennedy Center, he was praised for his performance as Holt Fay in Queenie. On Broadway, he has appeared in staged productions of The Piano Lesson, Serious Money, and The Boys of Winter. Pierce starred in Arthur Miller’s acclaimed play Death of a Salesman at London’s Young Vic Theatre in 2019 before its successful transfer to the West End. He was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Actor for this performance. The show returned to Broadway in 2022, with Pierce and Sharon D. Clarke, as well as Andre De Shields. In December 2022, on one of the production’s nights, a woman interrupted Act 2 by shouting at the stage. Pierce reportedly tried to calm her down from the stage and was patient in his efforts. Authorities eventually escorted her out of the building, and the play’s producers issued a statement.
Pierce took over as host of the nationally syndicated, Peabody Award-winning radio program Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2009, which featured live recordings from the House of Swing at Jazz at Lincoln Center. NPR’s Jazz Night in America, hosted by jazz bassist Christian McBride, took its place. Pierce began appearing on several albums recorded in New Orleans in 2016. In 2016, he recorded “Make America Great Again” with Delfeayo Marsalis, a song with Kermit Ruffins on Irvin Mayfield’s 2017 album, A Beautiful World, and another with Stanton Moore on his 2017 album, With You In Mind. Pierce recorded “The Ever Fonky Lowdown” with Wynton Marsalis in 2020.
Pierce considers himself a “classic entrepreneur” and a “true capitalist.”In 2013, Pierce was named one of the “100 Most Creative People in Business” by Fast Company. Pierce founded the non-profit Pontchartrain Park Community Development Corp. to build new affordable solar and geothermal homes in the area for Hurricane Katrina-displaced families. In 2012, Pierce, along with partners Troy Henry and James Hatchett, opened a chain of grocery stores called Sterling Farms in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward, inspired in part by Michelle Obama’s initiative to bring more supermarkets to food deserts where residents lack easy access to fresh produce. However, the chain closed thirteen months later. Sterling Farms also operated a convenience store chain known as Sterling Express. Sterling Henry inspired the names of the stores.
