Bogdanich is an adjunct lecturer at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and an assistant editor for The New York Times Investigations Desk. Before joining The Times in 2001, he worked as an investigative producer for CBS’s 60 Minutes and ABC News. He formerly worked for The Wall Street Journal as an investigative reporter. With Michael Forsythe, Bogdanich co-wrote the 2022 book When McKinsey Comes to Town: The Hidden Influence of the World’s Most Powerful Consulting Firm on consulting behemoth McKinsey & Company.
Bogdanich earned the Pulitzer Prize for Specialized Reporting in 1988 while working as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal for reporting on poor testing in American medical laboratories. He shared the 1999 Gerald Loeb Award for Network and Large-Market Television with Mike Wallace for a “Investigative Piece on the International Pharmaceutical Industry.” He received the George Polk Award for National Reporting in 2004. In 2005, he won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting and the Gerald Loeb Award for Large Newspapers for a series of exposes about corporate cover-ups of catastrophic railroad crossing incidents. Bogdanich and New York Times colleague Jake Hooker were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting in 2008 for their work on hazardous chemicals, that were discovered in products imported from China. Their reporting also won the 2008 Gerald Loeb Award for Large Newspapers. Bogdanich received the Gerald Loeb Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, and shared another Gerald Loeb Award in 2017 for Images/Graphics/Interactives.
