Victoria Mahoney Career
J.J. Abrams chose Victoria Mahoney to direct the second unit on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In the franchise’s forty-year history, she is the first woman to direct a STAR WARS film. Mahoney is currently in talks with Paramount Pictures to direct the feature film adaptation of Stark’s beloved graphic novel, Kill Them All. With the semi-autobiographical film Yelling to the Sky, Mahoney made her directorial debut in 2011. Mahoney wrote and directed “Yelling to the Sky,” a 2011 American drama feature film, when she was 21 years old. The film follows a young girl’s high school struggles as well as her difficult home life.
The film premiered in competition at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival, starring Zoe Kravitz as a troubled teen and Jason Clarke as her father. She received the titles of Auerbach Screenwriting Fellow, Annerberg Film Fellow, Cinereach Fellow, Maryland Fellow, IFP Narrative Lab Fellow, and Tribeca Film Fellow after working on the script with the Directors and Screenwriters Sundance Institute Labs. Victoria Mahoney wrote and directed the movie. The film was awarded the Golden Bear at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival. Victoria was the first woman director/writer from the United States to be invited to the Golden Bear competition in over sixty years.
Variety praised the film, saying it had a strong directing voice and that Mahoney possessed a genuine and driven creative gift. Victoria submitted the film to a number of film festivals around the world before it was released in theaters in late 2012. Mahoney reveals what she wants people to take away from her films in an interview with the Tribeca Film Institute, saying, “The level of ‘take away’ exists on such a case by case basis.” It all depends on what a viewer is going through and investigating in their own life. As a filmmaker, my overarching goal is to tap into individual inquiries and reflect on whatever is hidden. Inspiring an audience’s desire to learn more about whatever stories, wishes, wants, hungers, desires, questions, or aches they are currently experiencing. I hope that audiences will be inspired by my films and will want to learn more about the human condition.”
She was nominated for the $20,000 Heineken Affinity Award by the Tribeca Film Institute in 2013, but lost to her friend and colleague Ava DuVernay. For Flaunt, she directed a short film starring Selena Gomez and Shiloh Fernandez in the same year.
