Hollub began her career in 1981 with Cities Service, when it was a fully integrated oil and gas corporation, after working on oil rigs in Mississippi. Occidental Petroleum Corporation bought Cities Service in 1982. She went on to work with Occidental in the United States, Russia, Venezuela, and Ecuador, where she held technical and management responsibilities.
Hollub joined Occidental in 2005 to head the company’s expansion in the Permian Basin in West Texas and southeastern New Mexico. She worked as the Permian business’s manager of operations from 2009 to 2011, before being appointed to president and general manager in 2011.
Hollub served as executive vice president of Occidental’s California operations from 2012 to 2013. She was designated vice president of Occidental Petroleum and executive vice president of U.S. Operations, Oxy Oil and Gas, in October 2013, a position she maintained until July 2014. She was the executive vice president of Occidental Petroleum and president of Occidental Oil & Gas Corp in the Americas from July 2014 to May 2015, where she was in charge of Latin American operations as well as global exploration.
The board of directors of Occidental Petroleum chose Hollub to succeed departing CEO Stephen Chazen in May 2015, citing Hollub’s “excellent track record of successfully growing domestic oil and gas operations profitably and efficiently.” She was in charge of operations in the Middle East, Latin America, and the United States during a following transition phase. She was named Occidental’s senior executive vice president and president of Oxy Oil & Gas in May 2015. Hollub was named worldwide president and chief operating officer (COO) of Occidental in December 2015, with responsibility for the company’s midstream, chemical, and oil and gas divisions.
In April 2016, Hollub was named president and CEO of Occidental Petroleum, having oversight of operations, strategy, and financial management. She became the first woman to lead a major American oil firm as a result of her appointment, and Fortune rated her #32 on its annual list of the Most Powerful Women in Business that year. Occidental decreased production costs in reaction to dropping petroleum prices under Hollub’s leadership, but did not lay off staff. By July 2017, half of Occidental’s output came from the Permian Basin, with the remaining half coming from Qatar, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Colombia. A group of activist investors announced their intention to replace the entire Occidental board of directors, including Hollub, in March 2020, amid a catastrophic stock market meltdown and an international oil crisis.
