In March 1996, the companies Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz merged to form Novartis. The pharmaceutical and agrochemical divisions of Novartis formed an independent company. Other Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz businesses, like Ciba Specialty Chemicals, were sold or spun off as separate entities.
