Williams’ acting career began at the age of four. He later voiced Bobby in Little Bill, momentarily replacing Devon Malik Beckford in 2000, and appeared as himself (or an eponymous character, “Tyler”) on the PBS series Sesame Street from 2000 to 2005. He rose to prominence in September 2005 as the title character in the television series Everybody Hates Chris, which ended in May 2009. He received a Young Artist Award in 2007 for his work on the show. He also appeared as a guest on Two for the Money, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and the television sitcom Hi-Jinks. In late 2009, Williams appears in the second season of True Jackson, VP as True’s love interest Justin “Lil’ Shakespeare” Weber.
Williams appeared in the 2012 television series Go On as Owen. He also starred as Cyrus DeBarge in the Disney Channel film Let It Shine, with Coco Jones, Trevor Jackson, and Brandon Mychal Smith. Williams also performed on nine songs on the film’s soundtrack, showcasing his rapping abilities. The film premiered on June 15, 2012, and his songs “Don’t Run Away,” “Me and You,” “Guardian Angel,” “Let It Shine,” and “Moment of Truth” were all played on Radio Disney. The videos were also shown frequently on Disney Channel. Williams also appeared in the Disney XD series Lab Rats as a future version of the character played by his younger brother Tyrel Jackson Williams.
In 2014, Williams played Lionel Higgins in Justin Simien’s independent film Dear White People,[13] and was cast as the recurring character Noah on The Walking Dead. Williams appeared in the 2016 Criminal Minds spin-off Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders as Russ “Monty” Montgomery. Williams was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2017, three years after feeling symptoms. Since his diagnosis, he has undergone numerous procedures. In 2019, Williams played Jake in Robert Luketic’s teen romance comedy film The Wedding Year, which also stars Sarah Hyland, Jenna Dewan, Matt Shively, and Anna Camp.
