He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to study Musical Theatre. He began performing drag in 2008, with his first appearance at LaCage NiteClub. He later became a fixture in the drag scene. He enrolled in a program at the Institute of Beauty and Wellness in 2014, but dropped out to compete on RuPaul’s ‘Drag Race’. Mattel debuted in the seventh season and was eliminated in the fourth episode. This was a contentious elimination, and Mattel was brought back in the eighth episode, only to be removed in the tenth. Mattel came in sixth place in the competition. Despite his controversial exit, he was the most popular contestant. After this, Mattel appeared alongside fellow contestant, Katya Zamolodchikova, in the web series ‘UNHhhh’.
In 2017, the duo appeared on ‘The Trixie & Katya Show’ once more. They also appeared in a stage adaptation of ‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,’ titled ‘Trixie and Katya’s High School Reunion,’ the same year. He has toured the world and performed in a variety of venues since then. His most popular show is ‘Ages 3 and Up,’ a stand-up comedy show. Mattel also demonstrated his vocal abilities when he released his first studio album, ‘Two Birds,’ in May 2017.
