Abe, the father of Noah Weissman and Midge Maisel, was a tenured professor at Columbia. He was also recruited by Bell Labs, which was previously his dream job, but he quit when he discovered the program was fraudulent. He has been married to Rose Weissman for approximately thirty years.

Abe may be a very scrutinizing man. He has a tendency to criticize everything at first glance, which contributes to the character’s comedic nature. He appears to be very protective of his daughter Midge, especially when she goes out on comedy engagements, sometimes staying up all night waiting for her to return.

Throughout Midge’s marriage to Joel Maisel, Abe held a somewhat unfavorable opinion of Joel, but kept it hidden. He refers to their marriage (and subsequent divorce) as “the Joel fiasco.” Abe appears to be harsh and uncompromising, but he adores his family.

Documentary filmmaker Laurel Healy accepts a position working for her brother, Democratic Senator Luke Healy, in order to gain funding for her next film. However, she uncovers a scheme in which alien bugs have partially replaced the brains of several individuals, including members of Congress. Sometimes the bugs cause their victims’ heads to explode. The Cars’ song “You Might Think” is regularly featured in the series as a leitmotif for alien-infected characters.
