Storyline
Anthony Morton “Tony” Micelli is a retired Major League Baseball player who was forced to retire due to an injury to his shoulder. Angela’s feisty, sexually radical mother, Mona Robinson, features regularly. The depiction of a middle-aged woman with an involved social and sexual life was uncommon for television at the time. The title of the show refers to the simple reverse of the position of the two main characters, where a woman is a breadwinner and a man stays at home and takes care of the family. An easy-going, casual Tony and a motivated, self-controlled Angela are drawn to each other, although they are both unhappy with the notion of much of a run.
The show questioned current perceptions of young Italian-American males as macho, boorish, and unaware of life outside metropolitan working-class communities. The series would not conclude with the much-anticipated union but on a more enigmatic note. This was partly due to fears on the part of the network that marriage, marking a definite end, could affect the union. In the final season, Samantha found a new love in Hank Thomopoulous, who became a full-time character in January 1992.
