After four years of varsity lacrosse play at Virginia Military Institute, he graduated. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2006, he attended CalStLA to study theater. He is one of The Groundlings’ core members.

In the 2019 American biographical comedy-drama film The Dirt, Cavalero portrayed Ozzy Osbourne, the former lead vocalist of Black Sabbath who battled drug addiction and headlined one of Mötley Crüe’s early tours. Former abuser Frank Carlton Feranna Jr. relocates to Los Angeles in 1978 and formally adopts the identity “Nikki Sixx” in 1980. Together with guitarist Mick Mars and drummer Tommy Lee, he starts a new band called Mötley Crüe. The band sells out nightclubs on their well-received debut performance. Ozzy Osbourne counsels them on the boundaries of partying, and they appoint Doc McGhee as their manager.

The band spends millions of money, and their albums all go platinum. When Vince gets a 30-day jail sentence for vehicular manslaughter in 1984, Nikki develops a heroin addiction. After taking too much heroin, he is pronounced dead. Following their time in treatment, the band returns with their first number one album on the Billboard 200, Dr. Feelgood. Once their family are gone, Vince and Tommy turn to alcohol once more.

In 1992, Vince leaves the band, and John Corabi is brought in to take his place. Mick begins abusing painkillers, Heather divorces Tommy, and Skylar passes away from stomach cancer. Nikki bargains with Zutaut to free their tracks from Elektra Records in return for them returning the copyright to their compositions.

Cavalero School of Rock

In the American musical-comedy television series School of Rock, Cavalero played Mr. Finn, the new substitute teacher and an ex-rock musician who teaches the students how to play and work together as a band. He gets promoted to a regular teacher in the second season.
