Anthony Reed in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, Davidson was left in the trash at the age of eighteen months, and was taken in by a white woman who would later become his adoptive mother. When his parents adopted him, he went by Thomas Davidson. He had two older white siblings, Michael and Beryle. By the time he was five years old, his family had moved from Colorado to Wyoming to Oregon. His parents divorced when he was five years old, and his mother and the kids moved to Washington, D.C. Later, they moved to Wheaton, Maryland, and then to the Rosemary Hills neighborhood in Silver Spring.

Career
After graduating in 1981, he studied communications and interned at the radio station of the University of the District of Columbia for one semester. He had jobs in the kitchen of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, cleaning at Roy Rogers, bussing tables at an IHOP in Wheaton, and working in the stockroom of Hechinger in Hyattsville, Maryland. When Davidson’s childhood friend persuaded him to do stand-up at The Penthouse strip club in Park View, Washington, D.C., in 1984, he began his career as a stand-up comedian. He went on to play at other comedy clubs in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and the Washington Metropolitan area. He served as the opening act for Kenny G, Starpoint, and Patti LaBelle. In 1987, he took part in a telethon to raise money for WHMM. In 1987, Davidson prevailed in an amateur stand-up competition held at the Apollo Theater. He soon relocated to North Hollywood, California, where he became friends with Martin Lawrence, a resident of the building.After seeing him perform at the Comedy Store, Robert Townsend inquired about using him as the opening act for an HBO special.
