Tommy Career
Pope began comedy at the age of 28 after a suggestion from one of his brothers. He used the surname “Pope” as his stage name to prevent confusion with comic Tom Papa. In 2011, he won “Philly’s Phunniest,” a yearly comedy contest presented by Helium Comedy Club, and the following year, he appeared in the “New Faces” showcase at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. He made his television debut on AXS TV’s stand-up show Gotham Comedy Live in 2013 and competed in the eighth season of NBC’s Last Comic Standing in 2014. Pope initially met regular collaborator, John McKeever (co-creator and director of the web series Gilly and Keeves with comedian Shane Gillis) in 2008 while performing stand-up comedy.
Pope, McKeever, and Luke Cunningham (writer for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon) created the comedy sketch trio BirdText from 2010 until 2014. The group held a monthly show at Helium Comedy Club and created digital content that was broadcast on VH1, NPR’s Fresh Air, Philadelphia Magazine, and National Lampoon. They rose to prominence with their video series Real Househusbands of Philadelphia, a satire of the Real Housewives franchise. In 2013, Pope appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in a sketch with Steve Martin. Cunningham was writing for the program at the time. Pope appeared in an episode of Comedy Central’s storytelling series This Is Not Happening in 2018.
In 2014, Pope and McKeever founded another comic sketch group, Deer Prom, which played regularly at Carolines on Broadway and at the New York comic Festival in 2014. Pope, McKeever, and comedian Tim Butterly co-created the Comedy Central comedy series Delco Proper while attending Deer Prom. The sitcom follows the lives of three best friends from Philadelphia and Delaware County, and the network first released a single episode on its website in 2015, followed by three more episodes in 2016. Comedy Central announced in 2017 that it has ordered Delco Proper for the 2017-2018 season, but the show did not appear.
