McCarthy began her career in television and movies after performing stand-up comedy and theatre in Minneapolis and Chicago. He played James Bradley in Flags of Our Fathers and Scott Templeton, a morally challenged reporter, in The Wire’s last season. In the 2001 revival of Noises Off!, he made his Broadway debut. The Station Agent, McCarthy’s directorial debut, which he also scripted, earned the Audience Award and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. It also received the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay, the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay, the Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award, and recognition at film festivals from San Sebastian to Stockholm, Mexico City, and Aspen.
McCarthy’s second feature film, The Visitor, debuted at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival and earned McCarthy the Independent Spirit Award for Best Director in 2008.[12] He appears in the 2009 and 2012 dramas The Lovely Bones. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2010 for his work on the Pixar animated feature Up, which he co-wrote. McCarthy directed the unaired pilot for HBO’s Game of Thrones in 2010, but the episode’s final cut was panned by showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. McCarthy was replaced by Tim Van Patten, who directed the pilot’s final version, which aired in 2011. McCarthy was discouraged from returning to television directing for several years after the incident.
