Hayes developed and served as chairman and CEO of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley in 1992, a public-private partnership tasked with restoring the faltering regional economy of Silicon Valley. The activity of the organization was the topic of the book Grassroots Leaders for a New Economy. Hayes pioneered WEBSTOCK ’96, widely regarded as the first online entertainment event, in 1996, as “a combination TV show, rock concert, and theme park.” He collaborated with Melrose Place actor Andrew Shue to bring together the creative skills of MTV, Disney, Fox, and Nickelodeon for a 96-hour marathon event in connection with Rock the Vote and in support of the charity, Do Something. Hayes was also an executive of Applied Materials Inc. during the majority of the 1990s.
Hayes established Techmanity, Silicon Valley’s first technology and lifestyle event, in October 2014. During the two-day event, individuals and businesses whose goods and services are altering the globe were honored. Jared Leto, actor, singer, and tech entrepreneur; Tim Draper, venture capitalist; Scooter Braun, Hollywood producer; Kellan Lutz, actor and philanthropist; and California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom were among the featured speakers and attendees. Live Nation produced the after-hours entertainment, which included musical performances by Grammy Award winners Weezer, Thievery Corporation, Kongos, and Young Rising Sons. Sponsor T-Mobile presented DJ Dash Berlin in a special show. Hayes was named Senior Vice President/Head of New Media at Paramount Pictures in September 2015, where he is in charge of new technology, new distribution, new content, and new media talent.
