McKenney rose to distinction in 1998 when he made the lead job of Peter Allen in the Australian creation of The Kid from Oz. He played the role 766 times between 1998 and 2000, but Hugh Jackman got the part over McKenney when the production went to Broadway in 2003.
McKenney is best known for her work as a judge on Australia’s Dancing with the Stars version of the show. Since 2004, he has appeared in all fifteen seasons of the show. McKenney played Michael Minetti in the Ensemble Theatre production of Richard Alfieri’s two-hander play Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks at the Playhouse Theatre in the Sydney Opera House in 2006. This was McKenney’s first non-musical role.
