Graff is a graduate of Stagedoor Manor, an arts summer camp in upstate New York, where he also served as a counselor. He sang on the original-cast albums of Sesame Street (1970) and the sequel Sesame Street 2 (1971). Graff first gained notoriety in 1975 when he was cast as Jesse, a member of the Short Circus, on the PBS children’s television series The Electric Company. He played the role of Jesse until the show’s conclusion in 1977 (replacing Stephen Gustafson). Graff has written credits for Camp, Used People, The Vanishing, and The Beautician and the Beast. He has acted in a number of films, including Death to Smoochy, Dominick and Eugene, Strange Days, Not Quite Paradise, and The Abyss.
In 1984, he received a Tony Award nomination for his performance as Danny in Broadway’s Baby. As Homer, he played the lead role in the 1987 Off-Broadway musical Birds of Paradise. At the Mark Taper Forum in 2006, Graff oversaw the production of Jason Robert Brown and Dan Elish’s musical 13 on stage. He co-wrote and directed the movie Bandslam in 2009. Joyful Noise was a film he wrote and directed in 2012. He created the miniseries The Crowded Room (2023) on Apple TV.
