After graduating from college and working for several years at the Atlanta Constitution, Ansa wrote seven novels and was a frequent contributor to a variety of journals, including the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Ansa’s literature depicts a variety of Black women in the recent and present American South, using a combination of supernatural and conventional superstition. The New York Times recognized her first novel, Baby of the Family, as a Notable Book of the Year. Baby of the Family also made the African-American Bestseller List for Paperback Fiction. In October 2001, the Georgia Center for the Book selected Baby of the Family as one of the “Top 25 books Every Georgian”
She teaches writing workshops at Spelman College, Emory University, and the Coastal Georgia Community College. Ansa and her husband are now converting Baby of the Family into a feature picture starring Alfre Woodard, Loretta Devine, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Vanessa A. Williams, Todd Bridges, and Pam Grier. In March 2007, Ansa founded DownSouth Press, an independent publishing firm that specializes in African-American literature. Her sixth novel, Taking After Mudear[6], was the lead title on DownSouth Press’s inaugural list in the fall of 2007.
