Trensch joined the acting group of the Lake Dillon Theatre in Dillon, Colorado, in the summer of 2008. In repertory, he performed The Rocky Horror Show, Little Shop of Horrors, Into the Woods, Cabaret, and Rabbit Hole. Trensch was cast as Moritz Stiefel in the first national tour of Spring Awakening in 2009, during his sophomore year at Elon University. Trensch received the 2009 Denver Post Ovation Award for Best Supporting Actor in a National Touring Production and the BroadwayWorld Award for Best Individual Performance for his portrayal of Moritz. In early 2011, Trensch played Dwayne Hoover in the world premiere of William Finn and James Lapine’s Little Miss Sunshine at the La Jolla Playhouse Mandell Weiss Theatre.
On January 24, 2012, Trensch made his Broadway debut as Boq in Wicked, temporarily replacing Etai BenShlomo. After auditioning for Pasek and Paul’s musical Dogfight, which was simultaneously being directed by Wicked director Joe Mantello, he was granted the role. Soon after, he appeared at New World Stages in the off-Broadway revivals of Rent (as Gordon, Waiter, and others) and Bare (as Peter). Trensch read for the character of Jack in a development workshop for the film adaptation of Into the Woods the same year. On April 11, 2013, he debuted as Michael Wormwood in the Broadway adaptation of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Matilda the Musical, a role he held until June 8, 2014.
Trensch appeared in the world premiere of Samuel D. Hunter’s Clarkston at the Dallas Theatre Centre in January 2016. Then, in July, he played Tyler Clementi in Craig Carnelia and Joe Tracz’s Poster Boy, which had its world debut at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Trensch was hired as Barnaby Tucker in the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!, which premiered at the Shubert Theatre on April 20, 2017. He and co-stars Bette Midler, David Hyde Pierce, and Beanie Feldstein left the show in January. Trensch took up the title role in Dear Evan Hansen at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway on February 6, 2018. After a year, he departed the production and was replaced by Andrew.
Trensch played Dill Harris alongside Ed Harris in through Kill a Mockingbird from November 5, 2019 through March 12, 2020 on Broadway. At the Shubert Theatre, it was his third Broadway production.
Trensch will next appear as Mordred in the Lincoln Centre revival of Camelot, alongside Bartlett Sher and Aaron Sorkin.
