Susie Essman is an American stand-up comedian, actress, writer, and television producer well recognized for her roles on Broad City, Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Susie Greene, and in Bolt.

Susie Essman Family – Education
Leonard Essman, her father, worked as a clinical oncologist and physician. Zora Pressman, her mother, was a Russian language instructor at Sarah Lawrence College. She is the great-granddaughter of Russian opera magnate and silent film star Leo Feodoroff. Essman is Jewish, having immigrated from Poland and Russia with her grandparents. Nora Essman Morrow, her sister and a composer and musician, passed away in 2023.

Curb Your Enthusiasm
She appeared as Susie Greene, Jeff’s volatile wife, and Sammy’s mother in Curb Your Enthusiasm. Susie is cunning, short-tempered, nasty, violent, foul-mouthed, and easily enraged, despite the fact that she is clueless of Jeff’s constant infidelity. She is extremely protective of Sammy, as demonstrated in the episode “Denise Handicapped,” when she throws Larry’s Blackberry phone into the sea after he forgets to watch after her kid swimming. In “The Hot Towel,” Susie kicks Larry out of her house after he yells at Sammy to stop singing early in the morning. She commonly calls Larry “Lare.”
Though she sometimes yells at and bosses around Jeff, she genuinely loves about him and frequently intervenes to keep him from eating unhealthy foods or participating in Larry’s risky activities. Susie is also noted for her flamboyant, slightly gaudy, but costly attire. Susie curses at Larry and Jeff when she gets angry, frequently using the F-word, mocking Larry for being bald and wearing spectacles, and making fun of her husband for being overweight. In the episode “The Bat Mitzvah,” she is frequently told off by Loretta, who exiles her from her home for cussing and disrespecting Larry.
Comedy – Stand Up
Essman has been touring and performing at venues around the country for almost three decades. In 1988, she participated on HBO’s On Location: Women of the Night II alongside Joy Behar and other young female comedians. On January 5, 1989, she appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. On September 20, 1992, her debut half-hour special aired on HBO’s One Night Stand. Her ethnic background has inspired much of her comedy, and she has appeared in documentaries such as Heroes of Jewish Comedy and A History of Jewish Comedy. In July 2007, Essman made her standup comedy debut in the United Kingdom at the Newbury Comedy Festival’s Corn Exchange. While in England, she appeared in the British TV show 8 Out of 10 Cats.
Essman began her acting career with minor roles in two 1988 films, Crocodile Dundee II and Punchline, but she is most recognized for her role as Susie Greene, the wife of Jeff Greene (played by Jeff Garlin) in the HBO comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm. Essman told The New York Times that by the third season of the program, she couldn’t “walk down the street anymore without people stopping her and begging her to say [her character’s catchphrase] ‘You fat fuck'”. In 2007, Slate ranked Essman’s character one of the best on television, and it was one of the reasons the outlet anticipated the show’s return.
She also voiced Helen Higgins on Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers and was an infrequent correspondent on The Daily Show’s first season. She featured on Comedy Central’s Roast of Bob Saget on August 17, 2008, and voiced “Mittens” (the cat) in the 2008 Disney animated picture Bolt. She later reprised the role in the 2009 short Super Rhino, which was released on the film’s home media. She also appeared on Regis Philbin’s version of Million Dollar Password.
