The plot revolves around the United Nations and Mars, with UN Deputy Undersecretary Chrisjen Avasarala striving to keep war at bay. The crew of the Rocinante, commanded by Ceres police detective Josephus “Joe” Miller, discovers a biohazard on the asteroid spaceport Eros that kills off most humans. They launch an attack on the station responsible for the biohazard, an extra-solar bio-weapon known as the protomolecule. Miller is trapped and killed when the ship collides with Venus. As the OPA is recognized as the Belter government, the UN declares war, and political tensions increase. The protomolecule creates the Ring, a vast network of wormholes connecting to other solar systems containing habitable planets. With thousands of planets accessible via the Ring’s wormholes, a land rush to neighboring star systems with habitable worlds begins.
