Steve Thomas Builder – Career
When Thomas was 13, he decided he wanted to start sailing and purchased his own yacht. In 1977, Thomas worked as a carpenter on a 75-foot (23-meter) ketch that was being built in Antibes, France. He also sailed a 43-foot (13-meter) wooden sloop from England to San Francisco via the Panama Canal, the Galapagos Islands, the Marquesas, and Hawaii. He set sail across the Pacific in the early 1980s, spurred by an old desire. This journey took him to Satawal, where he met Mau Piailug and spent months learning the old star path navigation technique. In 1980, he relocated to Massachusetts.
In 1989, Thomas returned to Satawal to film The Last Navigator with Piailug for the PBS series Adventure. While writing his next book, which would be on his family’s history in Alaska’s Arctic, Thomas was approached by representatives from the PBS show This Old House, who had already vetted over 400 candidates. He took over for Bob Vila and presented the show from 1989 through 2003. Thomas has contributed to programming on The History Channel since leaving This Old House, hosting and producing the Save Our History series, which includes a program on George Washington’s estate and another about the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.
Thomas first became acquainted with Habitat in the early 1990s after seeing their stories on This Old House, and later collaborated with them on a five-part Renovation Nation series.[8] He is currently the International Spokesman and Ambassador for Habitat for Humanity, with a focus on Women Build, Builders Blitz, and ReStore. Thomas is a well-known green renovation speaker for both builders and homeowners. He is particularly interested in green, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance materials and technologies. He has been on CBS’s The Early Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and Jon & Kate Plus 8 among others. Steve Thomas Builders is his own building company.
