Steve Hartman Everybody Has a Story

Hartman rose to prominence as the creator of the award-winning feature film Everybody Has a Story. Hartman got the idea from Lewiston Morning Tribune reporter David Johnson. He began by telling a few stories on Public Eye. Hartman would throw a dart at a map of the United States and then travel to wherever the dart landed. When Hartman arrived, he would open a phonebook and, picking a name at random, he would try to find someone who would agree to be interviewed and tell their “story.” Hartman toured the United States, from Hawaii to Alaska, and from Buckhannon, West Virginia, to Miami, Florida. The series produced 123 stories since its inception in 1998. Hartman expanded the series to a global audience in 2010, when, with the help of NASA, each “Everybody in the World Has a Story” segment featured an astronaut in the International Space Station spinning a globe and pointing to random locations for Hartman to travel to and find a story.
