Steve Coll Biography
Steve Coll is a journalist, academic, and business executive from the United States. He is the head of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and the Henry R. Luce Professor of Journalism. From 2007 until 2012, he was the president and CEO of the New America think group. He was a staff writer for The New Yorker.

Steve Coll Career
Coll began writing for the Pasadena Weekly after graduating from college. He later contributed to California magazine with general-interest pieces. He began working for The Washington Post in 1985 as a general assignment feature writer for the Style section. Two years later, he was appointed to the position of finance reporter for the New York City-based daily. He and David A. Vise worked together on a series of reports that investigated the Securities and Exchange Commission, for which they received the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting and the Gerald Loeb Award for Large Newspapers. He relocated to New Delhi in 1989 to become the Post’s South Asia bureau head. He was a foreign correspondent until 1995.
Coll began working for the Sunday magazine insert of the newspaper in 1995 and was the magazine’s publisher from 1996 to 1998. In 1998, he was promoted to managing editor of the newspaper, a position he held until 2004. From late 2004 to August 2005, he worked as an associate editor at the newspaper. Coll joined The New Yorker’s writer staff in September 2005. He reported on foreign intelligence and national security from Washington, D.C. Coll was named the next director of the New America Foundation, a non-profit, non-partisan think tank based in Washington, D.C., on July 23, 2007. He has also written for the New York Review of Books, most notably regarding the Afghan war. On March 18, 2013, Coll was announced to succeed Nick Lemann as the Dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, effective July 1, 2013.
